What Is the Role of Social Media in Learning About Lupus?

As technology changes, there are more and more opportunities to not only connect with others and find support online, but also to learn more about lupus through social media outlets. However, as discussed previously, you should be careful about the reliability of this information and whether it is coming from an individual or a news source. Keep in mind that articles and information found on social media sites may not be written by medical professionals and that writers may exaggerate, misinterpret, or overemphasize information to draw attention. It is always best to seek social media sources supported by medical organizations or groups such as those listed in the tables in this chapter, many of which share information on multiple social media outlets. Ask your medical provider about information found through social media, as your medical provider (who knows you well) can determine if the information is accurate or the right choice for your specific situation.
